Trustworthy license overview

Font licenses without the fine-print panic.

Font licenses define where and how a typeface may be used. Start with the intended use, then verify every relevant permission in the original license.

License types

Understand the permission you actually need.

A font can be permitted for one use and restricted for another. Treat every use case as a separate license question.

Desktop Font

A desktop license usually covers installing the font on a computer and using it in static designs such as PDFs, presentations or printed materials.

Webfont

A webfont license covers serving font files through a website. Page-view limits, domains or self-hosting rules may apply.

Logo-Nutzung

Logo use means using the font in a wordmark or brand identity. Some licenses allow this freely, while others require an extended license.

App-Nutzung

App use normally means embedding font files in mobile, desktop or web applications. This frequently requires a dedicated app license.

eBook-Nutzung

An eBook license covers embedding the font in digital publications such as EPUB files. It may be separate from print or desktop rights.

Kommerzielle Nutzung

Commercial use includes work that generates revenue, promotes a business or is delivered to a paying client. Free download does not automatically mean commercial use is allowed.

Attribution

Attribution means crediting the designer, foundry or license. If required, the license usually explains where and how that credit must appear.
